ATTENTION PARENTS: DepEd suspends all students’ off-campus activities this February

Amid the threat of 2019 novel coronavirus (nCoV), the Department of Education (DepEd) suspends all of its national and regional activities scheduled this February.

On a Facebook post, Tuesday, Feb. 5, DepEd made the announcement together with the public release of Memorandum No. 15. Series of 2020.

“As a preventive measure amid the 2019-nCoV health situation, DepEd suspends the conduct of its national and regional events scheduled for February 2020—including the NSTF, NFOT, and NSPC,” the post says. “Likewise, all off-campus activities as defined in DO 66, s. 2017 are suspended.”

These events include the National Science and Technology Fair (NSTF) scheduled on Feb. 10 to 14 at Novotel, Cubao, Quezon City. Meanwhile, the National Festival of Talents (NFOT) was set from Feb. 17 to 21, at Ilagan, Isabela. Lastly, the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) that was originally scheduled on the same date of NFOT in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan is also temporarily postponed.

“Upon [the] advice of Department of Health (DOH), all national and regional activities involving learners and/or teachers requiring travel and congregation of various schools, divisions, and/or regions are suspended,” DepEd memo says.

The same memorandum also stated that “all personnel and learners exhibiting respiratory infections must not attend activities that involve congregation of learners within the school.”

DepEd, however, clarified that the Palarong Pambansa 2020 is not included in the list of postponed activities for this will officially open not on the month of February but on May.

“We reiterate that the Palarong Pambansa is NOT included on the list since it will officially open by May this year,” DepEd says.

The Philippines has two confirmed cases 2019 nCoV. The 44-year-old Chinese national travelling from Wuhan, China died in Manila on Feb. 1.
