Bringing culture and style all in one piece, Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray wore a custom-made pis siyabit pantsuit by designer Jearson Demavivas for the opening of “Ani ng Sining” at Puerto Princesa City Coliseum last Feb. 4.

The 26-year-old beauty queen was announced as an art ambassador by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, together with other artists KZ Tandingan and Julie Anne San Jose earlier this month.

Catriona Gray is known for her flair and love for the local textile of the country, especially when she competed for the Miss Universe pageant. “When I competed and wanted to represent our country, I also wanted to tell a story and I believe that the arts enable us to tell a story of all those who came before us, and of who we are, how we express ourselves, what we hold dear,” she said on her speech. “Going into Miss Universe I wanted to tell about how strong and how unique Filipino talent is. I did that through our textiles, through LuzViMinda in our national costume.”

The handwoven one-sided pantsuit was designed with pis siyabit fabric, a woven textile by the Tausugs, traditionally made out of cotton or silk. It featured intricate geometric patterns—squares, diamonds, and triangles— and is commonly used by Tausug men to depict ranking in Sulu province.

Jeason has created multiple pieces for Catriona Gray including her National Costume for the competition.
