I n 2014, Spanish artist Josè Manuel Ballester made waves in the art world by remaking some of the world’s most famous paintings, removing the subjects in works like The Birth of Venus by Sandro Boticelli and even the people in Francisco Goya’s The Third of May. Someone on the internet recently found Ballester’s works and remarked that it eerily looked like the subjects in these paintings have gone on self-quarantine or are practicing social distancing, two of the catchphrases in today’s COVID19-riddled world.

Among the hardest hit in the call for social distancing and in Manila’s community quarantine are performance artists. Several stage plays and theater productions have been put on indefinite hold or have been cancelled altogether. Together with many of the country’s establishments, artists are also suffering from the COVID-19 outbreak.

But as art has always been a powerful means of expressing a people’s best and worst, dreams and fears, we asked seven artists— Janos Dela Cruz, Melvin Culaba, Raymond Kawataki Go, Ludwig Ilio, Roxlee, Dengcoy Miel, and Paul Eric Roca—to present pieces that tackle this problem that is plaguing the entire world.
