Pasay’s Swab Test On Wheels promises Covid-19 testing in areas far from health centers

By Angela Casco

If Pasig and Valenzuela have roving wet markets, Pasay has a mobile coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) testing facility.

Called Swab Test On Wheels, the facility is a minibus, which initially served as a mobile dental clinic and has been converted into a mobile swab sample-collecting and testing vehicle.

The initiative is part of the city’s mass testing efforts among residents. It prioritizes testing those who belong to vulnerable communities such as senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) with no nearby or accessible health centers. Those with no means to travel to the nearest health stations will be prioritized, too.

To reduce the risk of novel coronavirus transmission Medical technologists wearing personal protective equipment are in charge of conducting the tests. All specimens collected will be sent to the Philippine Red Cross laboratory, which will release results after two days.

The repurposed bus is set to visit Barangays Cuyegkeng, Malibay, Dona Nena, and Dona Martha, all of which have been identified to have little to no access to health centers.

Repurposing structures has become commonplace as of late. As the number of Covid-19 cases continue to rise, so is the need for more facilities that can accommodate patients for care and treatment, and can decongest already packed hospitals. The Department of Public Works and Highway and its partners have transformed public venues such as the Philippine International Convention Center, World Trade Center, Rizal Memorial Coliseum, Ultra, among others into We Heal As One Centers or quarantine hospitals. More are undergoing retrofitting efforts to be pandemic-ready.

As of writing, Pasay has 149 confirmed Covid-19 cases.
