Your kids will love these online geography lessons from Sir David Attenborough

By VIANCA GAMBOA

The adults have found many ways to keep themselves occupied during the quarantine (or so, they believe), while some worry about their children not soaking up enough knowledge—school’s out, hiring online tutors are pretty expensive, homeschooling crisis, shortage of teachers willing to take it online, etc. If we’re living for virtual classes, might as well introduce its benefits to the kids.

For a fun start, BBC has launched a set of daily 20-minute curriculum-based online classes for students of different levels including primary, secondary, and post-16. Bitesize Daily teaches core subjects such as Math, English, Science, even Wellbeing (like how to console a friend during these trying times) and features a mix of videos, animations, practice activities, quizzes, weekly book club, and games for an interactive educational experience.

But what makes it really exciting is the roster of almost 200 teachers and celebrities joining this initiative, including legendary British broadcaster and historian Sir David Attenborough who has lent his iconic voice to science and nature documentaries such as The Blue Planet, Planet Earth, Life, and Our Planet on Netflix. The 93-year-old wildlife filmmaker has written over 40 documentaries and shows and co-produced over 210 video projects, all mirrored in his biographical documentary 60 Years in the Wild.

In this virtual classroom, he teaches geography lessons spanning the planet’s oceans, why animals look the way they do, and world mapping. According to BBC, tapping Attenborough is essential for giving the lessons a remarkable yet entertaining twist.

Other celebrities and fun lessons to look out for are: renowned professor Brian Cox who talks about solar system and gravity, Brit performer Mabeland former One Direction member Liam Payne taking part in a music and reading session called Music Big Read, Argentine footballer Sergio Agueroteaching Spanish, and Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker who appears throughout the show.
