Reports claim that the elderly are the most vulnerable to Covid-19 and that it spares the young ones. New cases now beg to disagree.

According to the New York Times, three children in the US have died of the coronavirus disease, while state officials are still investigating 85 possible cases of inflammatory diseases linked to Covid-19. Two of those children who died were at elementary age while the other one was an adolescent, according to Dr. Howard Zucker of state health commission.

This pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome has similar symptoms to toxic shock or Kawasaki disease. The report says that children with this virus-related condition may experience prolonged high fever, severe abdominal pain, rash, racing heart, and a change in skin color, including redness on the tongue. Dr. Zucker urges parents to err on the side of caution.

Aside from the US, similar cases have also been reported in Europe, such as France, Spain, and Italy. Meanwhile, the Washington Post says that, aside from attacking the lungs, cases also show that the coronavirus damages other parts of the human body.

“It attacks the heart, weakening its muscles and disrupting its critical rhythm. It savages kidneys so badly some hospitals have run short of dialysis equipment,” the report says. “It crawls along the nervous system, destroying taste and smell and occasionally reaching the brain. It creates blood clots that can kill with sudden efficiency and inflames blood vessels throughout the body.” Even though statistics show that Covid-19 harms more men than women, there also signs that it also complicates pregnancies.

As of writing, the Philippines has reported 11,618 Covid-19 positive cases with 772 deaths, and 2,251 recoveries.
