These horror movie characters are wearing couture this Halloween

This time, Halloween dressing goes the other way around

Here’s how Halloween dressing works. We pick a character, shop for a costume or play with what we have in our closet, then finish the look with makeup, maybe something shimmery or something red and gory.

Unfortunately, dressing up for this year’s Halloween may not be possible as costume social parties are unlikely to happen. But Filipino fashion designer Wilbur Lang channeled the spirit of creepy transformation and flipped it by dressing iconic horror movie characters in couture.

“I just finished watching the Spring 2021 fashion shows and I found most of the collections interesting. So, it inspired me to do something creative. I figured, it’s Halloween season so why not fused horror and fashion together,” he says. “Also, it helped that I have lots of time and I’m trying to learn Adobe Photoshop.”

This is not the first time Wilbur stepped into the eerie side of fashion. According to him, his design aesthetic has dark and gothic undertones. This style is evident in his past collections such as “Puritan” and “Dornröschen.”

As a designer and instructor at local fashion school Fashion Institute of the Philippines, Wilbur is very much familiar with client consultations and crafting a garments that best suit his client’s personality, wants, and needs. And it looks like he also applied the same process in choosing the looks to be worn by the characters.

“I selected the pieces depending on the character’s personality and style. Like Sadako Yamamura, she’s Japanese and she wears white all the time. Luckily, Yohji Yamamoto has some white draped dresses in his collection. Another example is Annabelle, she’s a doll and Moschino launched its Spring 2021 collection using marionette dolls,” Wilbur tells Manila Bulletin Lifestyle. “I spent more time researching the clothes that go well with the character than photoshopping. It was a fun process really.”

Looking at these images is like sitting in one crazy fashion show. Hit that play button on Michael Jackson’s Thiller and it’s a show.
